Hmong Futures

World Premiere

Sound Design Concept

The sound design of Hmong Futures had some interesting aspects. Musically, I was curious to explore the 3-generational discourse in an Hmong immigrant family using instruments such as Raj Nplaim (traditional Hmong flute), acoustic guitar, and meditative-sounding synth. I had a fun time accompanying the characters’ evolving dynamic through rhythmic and textural progression.

The soundscape changes from a variation of slice-of-life, natural soundscape to darker, graphic montages. It was a very enlightening and humbling process to navigate the fine line of storytelling along with the rest of the team. I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect on what theater could do for the community.

Also, I now have a whole library of chicken sounds. BAWK BAWK
